About the Organisation
The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) is an intergovernmental organisation working to strengthen national capacity and regional solidarity so Pacific nations can manage, control, and develop their tuna fisheries now and in the future.
Based in Honiara, Solomon Islands, FFA's 17 member nations are Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
FFA was established to help countries sustainably manage the fishery resources within their 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). FFA is an advisory body providing expertise, technical assistance and other support to its members who make sovereign decisions about their tuna resources and participate in regional decision making on tuna management through bodies such as the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC).
Since 1979, FFA has facilitated regional cooperation so that all Pacific countries benefit from the sustainable use of tuna – worth over USD $3 billion a year, and important for many people’s livelihoods in the Pacific.

About the Opportunity
FFA is now looking for a full-time Fisheries Management Adviser to join their team in Honiara, in the Solomon Islands. Reporting to the Director of Fisheries Management, you will primarily be responsible for providing advice and support to FFA Member Countries in the development of effective national and regional management arrangements for their oceanic fisheries.
You will also take on the role of WCPFC Liaison & Coordinator, assisting FFA Member Countries in the preparation, participation and implementation of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, and other regional and global fisheries management arrangements.
Please note this is a 3-year contract role, with possible renewal for a further 3 years subject to performance appraisal and availability of funding.
Some of your key responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):
- Advising and assisting Pacific Islands countries to identify, prioritise and analyse fisheries management issues in the oceanic fisheries of the western and central Pacific;
- Preparing information and negotiation briefs for FFA Member Countries on fisheries management and science (including stock assessment and modelling) issues related to the work and meetings of the WCPFC and its subsidiary bodies;
- Researching, preparing and presenting papers at national, regional and/or international forums concerning the background, history and current institutional arrangements and key issues in fisheries bodies;
- Assisting FFA members in reviewing and implementing effective strategies for compliance with WCPFC Conservation and Management Measures;
- Taking a lead role in the management and implementation of FFA projects in Port State Measures and Catch Documentation Schemes; and
- Fostering effective relations with the oceanic fisheries managers of FFA Member Countries and other key stakeholders, particularly the WCPFC.

About You
To be successful in this role, you must have demonstrated experience in fisheries policy development & analysis, alongside significant experience in the research, preparation and presentation of submissions and papers to large fora.
You will have a sound understanding and practical knowledge of the application of contemporary fisheries management principles, methodologies and issues, alongside the knowledge of, or capacity to rapidly acquire, oceanic pelagic fisheries with an emphasis on tuna and the tuna industry.
As you will be reporting to various multinational stakeholders and international bodies frequently, your excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication/presentation skills will be crucial to your success.
The ideal candidate will possess at least five years progressive experience in fisheries management, and hold a tertiary qualification in fisheries management, natural resource management, fisheries science or other relevant, related field.
Most importantly, FFA is looking for a patient, tenacious and driven professional with the ability to negotiate the complex international organisational frameworks that the FFA operates within, who is able to manage multiple competing demands while diligently maintaining relationships with all stakeholders.

You will also have superannuation paid at 7.5% into either a nominated fund or as an additional cash supplement. FFA reimburses all reasonable medical, dental, and optical expenses for yourself and dependants. Insurance coverage is also provided for personal accident, life, medical & repatriation.
Education for dependent children will be reimbursed at 75% of tuition fees (Conditions apply). If your dependent child is educated overseas, paid school travel may be available for you or your child to visit each other once a year.
Accommodation assistance is also available.
Additionally, relocation expenses will be paid, with an establishment grant paid on arrival in Honiara. Annual airfares back to the country of repatriation will be provided, and a repatriation allowance of 2 weeks’ base salary on return to home-base at the end of the contract. There is also a retention incentive of 14% of your base salary which will be paid on the completion of your two-year contract.
On top of all this, you will have access to 6 weeks of annual leave each year, giving you plenty of time to explore this stunning part of the world!
