The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) is an intergovernmental organisation working to strengthen national capacity and regional solidarity so Pacific nations can manage, control, and develop their tuna fisheries now and in the future.

About the Opportunity

FFA has an exciting opportunity for a Fisheries Economist to join their team in Honiara, Solomon Islands, on a 3 year, fixed term contract with possibilities for extension. The responsibilities and benefits for this position are dependent on the skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. This will be classed at Band 10 for a candidate with less experience or Band 12 for candidates with more extensive experience and higher qualifications.

Reporting to the Director of Fisheries Development, in this role you will be responsible for conducting economic analysis and collecting the required economic data to be used in bio-economic models.

You will also assist in developing bio-economic models to guide fisheries management and policy at the national, sub-regional and regional levels. 

An important aspect of the role will be using models and other analysis to provide policy-related information to members via written reports and oral presentations at regional and sub-regional meetings as well as national consultations.

About You

To be considered for this role you will possess qualifications in economics or in fisheries management, natural resource management or a relevant discipline with strong economics content. 

You must exhibit strong analytical skills which will allow you to provide sound economic analysis of relevant fisheries situations. In addition, your highly developed communication and interpersonal skills will ensure you are able to liaise with a diverse group of stakeholders at all levels.

Experience in developing and applying economic models in the provision of policy advice as well as in researching, preparing and presenting submissions and papers to national and international forums or experience working with fisheries or natural resource economics would be highly regarded but is not essential for this role.

Importantly, you will be able to work in a culturally and disciplinary diverse team and will have high levels of respect for individual and cultural differences. Your willingness to travel is an essential part of this role and you will be frequently visiting other member nations and travel further afield may also be required from time to time.  

About the Benefits

The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) is offering the successful candidate a competitive salary package circa USD$64,018 (Band 10) - USD$86,131 (Band 12) (dependent on your skills and experience) inclusive of COLDA and location allowances which is TAX-FREE for most FFA member countries.

You will also have access to accommodation assistance and relocation expenses covered, with an establishment grant paid on arrival in Honiara.  Annual airfares back to your country of repatriation will be provided, and a repatriation allowance of 2 weeks’ base salary on return to home-base at the end of your contract. There is also a retention incentive of 21% of your base salary which will be paid on the completion of your three-year contract. 

Your superannuation will be paid at 7.5% into either a nominated fund or as an additional cash supplement. FFA reimburses all reasonable medical, dental, and optical expenses for yourself and dependents. Insurance coverage is also provided for personal accident, life, medical & repatriation.

Education for dependent children will be reimbursed at 75% of tuition fees (Conditions apply). If your dependent child is educated overseas, paid school travel may be available for you or your child to visit each other once a year.
